The most beautiful design wineries in Tuscany

The great masters of architecture meet wine

Tuscany is one of the Italian regions that has created a perfect combination of its extraordinary wines and cellars. Here it’s possible to combine the typical tasting with a visit to places of design created by the greatest masters of architecture. Structures that integrate into the surrounding area and use cutting-edge technologies in production. We suggest six that uniquely combine form and content.

Antinori winery
A construction that merges with the earth, a tribute to the terroir of origin of the Antinori family, from which it takes its color (corten steel) and where it extends below ground level. The volume is almost invisible to the outside except for a few elements and the famous helical staircase that connects the three floors. Inside, an immense space cut by beams of light houses the barriques. The project was carried out by the Archea Associati studio in collaboration with the Marquis Piero Antinori and his daughters.

Mortelle
Also owned by Antinori, a lesser-known wine-growing reality is Le Mortelle. In the heart of the Maremma it is located on the top of the slight hill overlooking the estate. The cylindrical structure develops around a large steel staircase. Not only technology but also environmental sustainability that accompanies the entire production of wines.

Petra
Also in this case we are in Maremma, here we find a project created by the artist Mario Botta. Petra is a monumental architecture with a round shape, sectioned by an inclined plane that embraces the surrounding vegetation and vineyards. Inside there are tanks for almost completely hypogeous winemaking.

Castello di Fonterutoli
Castello di Fonterutoli is a harmonious balance between nature, territory and ancient village. The fronts are covered with local clay bricks, shaped by the Mazzei architecture studio to create a striking dark-light effect. The structure stands out for its classic contemporary style, functions and spaces: traditional materials used in completely new ways.

Colle Massari
Colle Massari rises on the slopes of Monte Amiata and is one of the most beautiful and suggestive wineries in Tuscany. Energy saving, green building and bioclimatic engineering guided the conception and careful choice of each individual component. Designed by Edoardo Milesi, the property is modern and functional and fits perfectly into the ancient castle.

Tenuta Ammiraglia
Tenuta Ammiraglia, designed by the architect Piero Sartogo, of the Marquis Frescobaldi, is located in Maremma. The place where it stands, called Poderi della Capitana, was given as a dowry to the captain of the Ammiraglia ship. To keep this memory, the Marquis Frescobaldi decided to call the estate with the name of the fleet. The result is a building that recalls in its forms the bow of a ship, in which exterior and interior are one.

For those looking for an authentic experience near The Mall Firenze we suggest three historic cellars owned by the Frescobaldi family: Castello di Nipozzano, Castello Pomino and Villa di Remole. Three structures, dating back to the Middle Ages, which are located in the heart of the Chianti Rufina surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see. Immersed in ancient villages and in a fairytale atmosphere, it is possible to taste the production of the wines of the estates and savor the gastronomic excellence that the area has been offering for generations: a real immersion in history.

You just have to get lost in the Tuscan countryside in search of a stop that will satisfy your eyes and palate.
