Restaurant La Pignese in Sanremo
A restaurant that has made history in Liguria

La Pignese, one of the oldest restaurants in Liguria, is located in the ancient fishing village of the area upstream of the old Sanremo port, in the fishermen’s square, between Piazza Bresca and Piazza Sardi, where every evening you can watch the traditional fish auction, surrounded by orange trees. This is one of the favourite places among singers during the Sanremo Festival: Jovanotti, Elio e le storie tese, Vasco Rossi, Ligabue, U2, Pavarotti, Lucio Dalla, just to name a few.

The name of the restaurant La Pignese originates from the first owner of the restaurant, who came from the old part of Sanremo, called Pigna, a stronghold of Sanremo citizens against the Saracen raids in previous centuries.

The place soon became a meeting point for carters coming from the hinterland, bringing their products to the aristocratic English and Russian families who enjoyed spending the winter in the riviera’s mild climate. In 1919, having returned from the war, the head of the Ventimiglia family, Giacomo, took over the tavern that has since belonged to the same family. Currently the third generation is represented by Marco, not forgetting the important role played by the women in the family, with their recipes and personal additions that make the Ligurian cuisine unique.

La Pignese Restaurant in Sanremo is the ideal choice to feel at ease any time, without ever compromising on quality: here simplicity goes hand in hand with refinement. The setting is rather elegant without aiming to be pretentious. And because of its atmosphere and authentic products, from  bread baked every morning to the evening dessert cart, La Pignese restaurant can be considered an authentic trattoria. Fresh raw materials and original combinations give life to light and balanced creations, which vary according to seasonal trends.
