From Piombino, about two hours from The Mall Florence, a short ferry ride is all it takes to reach one of the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean.

If the sirocco, or southerly wind, is blowing, start your Elba weekend on the northern coast and Portoferraio, with its Medici fortifications, alleys overlooking the harbour, and the residences that hosted Napoleon during his exile. Climb up to Forte Falcone for one of the most stunning views on the island, then treat yourself to lunch overlooking the sea at Le Viste. The afternoon is all about the beach: Le Ghiaie, also reachable on foot, Capo Bianco, more secluded and scenic, Biodola, perfect for families, or Sansone, one of Elba’s most spectacular beaches, where you can also enjoy an aperitif at Sansone Reef.

If the wind is blowing from the north, head to the villages of Porto Azzurro, on the sea, and Capoliveri, nestled in the hills. Then explore the southern coast, choosing between the beaches of Zuccale, nestled in a wide bay, Barabarca, for a more intimate atmosphere, Lido di Capoliveri, one of Elba’s largest, or one of the island’s coolest,  Acquarilli, for an aperitif on the headland. Heading west, you’ll find scenic Fetovaia, followed by the so-called Shipwreck Beach in Pomonte, for a breathtaking sunset.

If the sea isn’t your thing, the island also offers splendid alternatives, on foot or by bike. You can climb Monte Capanne, the highest peak in the Tuscan Archipelago, explore the ancient mines of Monte Calamita – they can also be reached by cable car from Pozzatello for those with a head for heights, – or visit the Rio Marina Mining Park, with its tunnels and trains.
