Bordighera, the City of Palms
18/06/2024
What to see and do in the seaside town that captivated Monet

We’re just half an hour from The Mall Sanremo and less than 6 km from the French border, in the “City of Palms”. To get an idea, take a look at one of Claude Monet’s celebrated paintings from 1884, when he chose Bordighera on his journey in search of new inspiration.

“These places seem to be made specially for painting en plein air”, wrote his beloved wife Alice Hoschedé.

BORDIGHERA ALTA
A visit to Bordighera can only start with a stroll among the picturesque little streets of the ancient town centre.

THE VILLAS
Villa Garnier (now a hotel), built by the French architect of the same name, who spent many summers here; Villa Etelinda (also designed by Garnier) was frequented by numerous illustrious guests including Margherita of Savoy, who later had her own private residence built in Bordighera, naturally called Villa Regina Margherita. Finally, the villa (now a house-museum) of the painter Pompeo Mariani. Each has its own luxuriant garden.

CHURCH OF SANT’AMPELIO
This delightful and romantic little church perched atop a cliff has become a symbol of Bordighera.

THE BEODO TRAIL
An ancient palm-lined path overlooking the sea, which follows the route of Bordighera’s original aqueduct (the Beodo).

RATTACONIGLI BEACH
The longest and most westerly of Bordighera’s beaches, bathed by the beautiful Ligurian sea and already feeling the influence of the nearby Côte d’Azur. It’s the perfect stretch of coast for anyone seeking space and comfort.

DOLCEACQUA
Less than half an hour from Bordighera, don’t miss one of the prettiest villages in western Liguria, and another of the places Monet fell in love with, painting the Doria Castle and the Roman bridge several times.
