A journey among the vineyards of the best wine producers near The Mall Sanremo

Via Terzorio 92, Santo Stefano al mare, Imperia
ph. +39 349 352 1569
This is the kingdom of the Pigato grape, and also the heart of the ancient history of Ligurian winemaking: in the Roman-era settlement flanked by vineyards overlooking the sea stand the remains of a kiln that once produced amphorae for the transport of wine. Here the company philosophy is based on a green approach, and the unmissable wines include an exceptional Pigato (white), a superb Vermentino (white) and an equally excellent Rossese (red). 15 minutes from The Mall Sanremo.

Strada Vasia, Imperia
ph. +347 369 0453
The range produced by this strictly family-run winery is mainly Pigato, and encompasses both Metodo Classico sparkling wines and still options, as well as Metodo Ancestrale labels. Be sure to sample the Pigato Sogno, an excellent wine made with great mastery. 28 minutes from The Mall Sanremo.

Strada Maciurina 7, Soldano, Imperia
ph. +39 339 396 5477
A small winery almost on the border with France, specialising in the production of Rossese di Dolceacqua. It’s located in a village on the banks of the Verbone river, and it’s a genuine example of heroic winemaking in a naturally unfavourable area. With the Galeae and Beragna crus, it succeeds in producing typical wines with great character. 55 minutes from The Mall Sanremo.

Via Umberto I 81, Fraz. Borgo, Ranzo, Imperia
ph. +39 0183 318082
Francesca, her husband Roberto and her sister Annamaria are at the heart of this winery making superb quality wines, typified by two whites: Pigato Le Russeghine and U Baccan, from vines whose roots go deep in the limestone and blue clay soil, rich in fossil. 60 minutes from The Mall Sanremo.

Via Costa Parrocchia 42, Ranzo, Imperia
ph. +39 0182 53458
We’re in a small village in the Arroscia valley, a precipitous area covered in terraces. Massimo is a grower who focuses on local varieties, although his vineyards also contain international grapes such as Viognier. Over half the production is Pigato. Top of the range is Granaccia Costadevigne. 60 minutes from The Mall Sanremo.
