What to see in the medieval village of Taggia
19/03/2024
Sea, culture and some of Italy’s best olives, just a short trip from The Mall Sanremo

PONTE ANTICO
Probably the greatest treasure of this small village a stone’s throw from the sea is this impressive ancient bridge over the Argentina river, 275 metres long and with a total of 15 arches. The oldest section was built in the 13th century, and the bridge was lengthened in the 17th and 18th centuries. On the bridge are two votive shrines and several stone benches where you can rest and admire the scenery.

VILLA CURLO
At one end of the bridge stands this elegant 18th-century villa complete with chapel and gardens, a typical example of an aristocratic Ligurian residence.

CASTLE
Built in the mid-16th century at the highest point of ancient Taggia, today the perimeter wall still exists; in summer the castle becomes a picturesque open-air theatre.

CHURCHES
The Church of Nostra Signora del Canneto dates back to the late Middle Ages and boasts a magnificent Romanesque tower; the 15th-century Dominican Convent is home to exquisite works of religious art; and the Santuario della Madonna Miracolosa is famous for a statue that was declared miraculous by Pope Pius IX.

THE PONENTE CYCLEWAY
Taggia is one of the stops on the Ponente Ligure cycleway, a 24-kilometre route along the former railway line from San Lorenzo to Ospedaletti.

ARMA DI TAGGIA
The port of the ancient village of Taggia, today a lively seaside town with a large beach and a sunny promenade.

SANTUARIO GROTTA DELLA SS. ANNUNZIATA DELL’ARMA
If you walk along the seafront towards Bussana, you’ll find this little gem: a tiny church carved out of the rock in the Grotta di Arma. Inhabited since prehistoric times, legend tells that a deaf and dumb girl regained her hearing and speech here, following a vision of the Virgin Mary.

FOOD
Taggia is the home of the celebrated Taggiasca olive, which is used to make wonderful oil, intense greenish-yellow in colour with a fruity, slightly spicy flavour.
