FOLIAGE
Beautiful all year round, Casentino is one of the top destinations for those who want to admire the spectacular autumn foliage, with the majestic woods (Foreste Casentinesi and beyond) ablaze with fiery colours.
PARCO NAZIONALE DELLE FORESTE CASENTINESI
One of the most beautiful, impressive and ancient forest areas in Europe. We are on the border between the Tuscan and Romagna Apennines. A magical place for those who love nature and outdoor activities: a network of 600 km of trails among centuries-old fir trees, beech trees and maples, accessible on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback and, in winter, with skis and snowshoes.
SANTUARIO DELLA VERNA
From the enchantment of nature to the spirituality of a 13th century sanctuary in a verdant cliffside setting, 1128 meters above sea level on the side of Mount Penna, which can also be reached on foot through the evocative Bosco delle Fate or by following the Sacred Forests Path that starts from Lago di Ponte (Tredozio). The sanctuary is known especially for its association with St. Francis of Assisi who is said to have received the stigmata here.
POPPI
One of the most photographed places in all of Casentino. Its crowning jewel is the ancient castle of the Counts Guidi that dominates the village. Inside is the Rilliana Library, with 25,000 ancient volumes, incunabula and manuscripts, and a chapel with a cycle of 14th-century frescoes attributed to Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto.
CASTELLO DI ROMENA
Near Poppi, on a hill with a breathtaking view, stand the imposing ruins (which can be visited) of another of the Guidi family’s castles, which in its long history housed figures such as Dante Alighieri and Gabriele d’Annunzio.
CAMALDOLI MONASTERY AND HERMITAGE
Founded a thousand years ago by Saint Romualdo, Camaldoli is a community of Benedictine monks. A mystical place, enveloped in spirituality, with a hospice that still welcomes guests and pilgrims.
CAPRESE MICHELANGELO
In this small stone village, one of the greatest artists of all time was born in 1475, as narrated in the Michelangelo Birthplace Museum.
