Just eight kilometres from France—and only half an hour from The Mall Sanremo—Ventimiglia is the gateway to Western Liguria and one of the region’s most surprising destinations, with its Provençal atmosphere, medieval alleyways (carrugi) and botanical gardens perched above crystal-clear waters.
Your first day begins in the Città Alta, where narrow stone lanes, peaceful squares and sweeping sea views reveal the town’s historic heart. At its centre stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Ligurian Romanesque architecture, alongside the ancient Baptistery. After enjoying a coffee in the historic centre, make your way down to the covered market, where stalls laden with fresh fruit, vegetables and local produce offer an authentic taste of the region.
For lunch, stop at Il Giardino del Gusto to enjoy chef Emanuele Donalisio’s refined cuisine. In the afternoon, make your way to the Forte dell’Annunziata, home to the Girolamo Rossi Civic Archaeological Museum, then follow the path leading to Spiaggia delle Calandre, where golden sand meets gently shelving waters. On your way back, treat yourself to sunset views from the fortress belvedere before heading to the modern Cala del Forte marina, beautifully illuminated after dark, for dinner at Marixx.
On your second day, venture even closer to the French border. Spend the morning exploring the Hanbury Botanical Gardens, one of Europe’s most important and beautiful botanical gardens, before continuing to the Balzi Rossi, the remarkable archaeological site renowned for its Cro-Magnon remains.
For lunch, choose Ristorante Balzi Rossi, where seafood specialities are served against a spectacular coastal backdrop. Then head to the nearby Spiaggetta dei Balzi Rossi, one of Liguria’s most beautiful beaches. Spend the afternoon alternating a refreshing swim with an aperitif by the sea, before staying into the evening to enjoy live music, DJ sets or open-air cinema under the stars.
