TOWER OF FREDERICK II
This watchtower was built in the 13th century by Frederick II to guard the village. It was destroyed during the Second World War until a new tower, faithfully identical to the original one, was built in 1958. It rests on a very beautiful spot from where it is possible to admire the breathtaking views of San Miniato and the surrounding areas.
CHURCHES
Just below the watchtower of Frederick II, there is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio. It features a bell tower known as the Tower of Matilda, named after Matilda of Tuscany, who according to legend was born in the nearby Palazzo dei Vicari. Other important churches are the 16th-century Sanctuary of SS Crocifisso and the Church of San Domenico (formerly known as the church of St Jacopo and Lucia), featuring a bare façade but with a beautifully decorated Baroque interior. A small gem is the 14th-century frescoed Oratory of Sant’Urbano, located along the ancient Via Angelica.
PALACES
Overlooking the square of Prato del Duomo, there is the Palazzo Vescovile, still used today as the residence of the Bishop of San Miniato, and the aforementioned Palazzo dei Vicari, once the residence of the emperor’s vicars. In Piazza della Repubblica, there is the majestic Palazzo del Seminario Vescovile, built in 1650 alongside the ancient walls of the village. Instead, within the Palazzo Comunale, you can visit the Oratory of Lorentino, the Hall of the 7 virtues and the Council Hall with their beautiful frescoes.
MUME – MUSEO DELLA MEMORIA
Inaugurated in 2018, the museum aims to recount the life and events of the village’s citizens during the Second World War, through accounts, artefacts and interactive displays.
NATIONAL WHITE TRUFFLE TRADE FAIR
The hills around San Miniato are the ideal environment for truffle growth. The National White Truffle Trade Fair is a very important event for truffle lovers, held during the last three weekends of November when the town’s historic centre hosts many exhibitors, workshops and events.
