Bolgheri is a small medieval village on the Etruscan coast, famous for its wine, the castle and the long tree-lined avenue flanked by two rows of dense centuries-old cypress trees.

The long avenue, built in 1940 and then embellished with cypresses at the behest of Count Guido Alberto, takes travelers from the main road up the hill to the dwellings of Bolgheri. The famous Viale dei Cipressiand Bolgheri are known worldwide for the poem by Giosuè Carducci entitled Davanti San Guidowhere he speaks with the cypress trees calling them young giants welcoming him as an adult in the land of his childhood, the land of fairy tales and dreams, which are now buried like grandmother Lucia in the cemetery above the hill. The verses of this celebrated poem read:

The cypresses that in Bólgheri high and frank
Go from San Guido in a double line,
Almost running, young giants
They jumped up and looked at me.

The Bolgheri castle, located at the end of the avenue, was founded in the first half of the sixteenth century. Previously, it stood in the town of Castelvecchio and belonged, like the surrounding territory, to the Gherardesca Counts. The town of Bolgheri, enclosed within the walls of the castle, has maintained its original structure, becoming alive over time with shops and restaurants, but always maintaining its pure and authentic nature.

The land of Bolgheri is also known for the renowned excellence of its wine production, enabled by the particularly dry and sunny coastal micro-climate that allows the cultivation of a series of Bordeaux grape varieties – such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Among the favourites, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto stand out, produced by prestigious and world-known wineries.
