The Giannella tombolo (a mound) links the promontory of Monte Argentario to the Maremma, the Feniglia tombolo to the south joins it to Ansedonia, and the artificial dam links it to nearby Orbetello. Once you reach the northern slope of the promontory, Porto S. Stefano appears among the tree branches, as a lively and colourful town sprawling around the two natural harbours, which were once fishing shelters and today are much-appreciated tourist ports. The village offers everything a sea tourist can appreciate: small beaches that can be reached in a few minutes, restaurants where you can enjoy excellent seafood dishes and venues designed to let you enjoy the long summer evenings. Enclosed among the fortifications that have protected it for centuries, Porto Ercole is a seaside village where the richness of the past accompanies the needs of a modern marine tourist hub. The historic village on which the Rocca stands enjoys quaint crossroads and narrow streets is the heart of the town, while in summer the Marina – with its colourful buildings, clubs and trendy shops framing a beautiful walk – is peppered with boats.

The sea is the undisputed star of the Argentario, offering overwhelming sensations every season. If you seek comfort and sand, the Giannella tombolo facing north will let you enjoy magnificent sunsets, while the Feniglia beach to the south boasts a splendid sandy shore and pine forest that can be crossed by bike or on foot up to Ansedonia. Porto S. Stefano offers small typical beaches within walking distance from town: Cantoniera, Bionda, Marinella, Moletto, Caletta and Siluripedio.

If you’re in search of wilderness, beauty and secluded sands, don’t miss beaches Cacciarella, Cala Grande, Cala del Gesso and Mar Morto and Cannelle, reachable by car and then down paths surrounded by Mediterranean scrub.
