Il Monte Amiata

An ancient volcano in the heart of Tuscany

Mount Amiata, an unusual and little-known place in Tuscany is included in the provinces of Grosseto and Siena and dominates the surrounding valleys from its 1738 meters high.

Amiata, the highest mountain in southern Tuscany, starting from 800 meters. it is covered by a splendid forest of chestnut, fir and beech trees. At the top, with conditions of good visibility, it is possible to admire a spectacular panorama that ranges for hundreds of kilometers over the Maremma, the Sienese hills and Lake Bolsena. Amiata is an ancient sleeping volcano that conserves heat and energy. Imposing trachytic boulders remain from past riots, motionless among beech and chestnut trees, softened by moss coats. It is not a mountain that evokes the drama of peaks and rock walls, rather in its grandeur it expresses harmonies of shapes and spaces.
The springs, which flow in considerable quantities on Mount Amaita, constitute an imposing water wealth that feeds the numerous spas in the province of Siena and Grosseto.
The area of Monte Amiata is sparsely populated, small picturesque towns are located along the valleys of the mountain, especially in the areas located west and east of the summit, where the main centers Arcidosso and Abbadia San Salvatore are located.

Monte Amiata, in winter, offers ski enthusiasts a natural gym set in the largest beech forest in Europe. The sports activities that can be practiced are truly numerous, from skiing (8 ski lifts, 12 alpine ski slopes, 4 cross-country ski tracks, 1 snow park) to winter sports in general, trekking and hiking in an area full of parks and nature reserves populated by deer, fallow deer, chamois, wolves and roe deer, where the rocky boulders seem to defy the force of gravity, and the thermal water springs, streams and ponds draw suggestive landscapes to say the least.
