Contemporary art villages in Tuscany

Peccioli, Volterra and Lajatico: three pearls of the Pisan countryside ready to amaze you

Contemporary art is found everywhere in Tuscany, but especially in the flat, green Pisan countryside, where it is easy to stumble across a large amount of giant installations, colourful places and futuristic-architectural structures scattered around this wonderful landscape or in small ancient villages among narrow streets and stone houses.

PECCIOLI

Since the 1990s, this historic village has been a real open-air contemporary art museum, always enriched by beautiful pieces of artwork by artists from all parts of the world. Do not miss out on a visit to the Palazzo senza tempo with its incredible outdoor panoramic terrace featuring colourful murals by Daniel Buren, as well as a stroll along the long pedestrian walkway (72 metres), which the artist Patrick Tuttofuoco enclosed in his Endless Sunset. Just outside, there are two of the Giants of Peccioli, one at the Fonte Mazzola amphitheatre, and the other one crouching down on top of a building near the Prehistoric Park. Instead, we can find the wall art of the famous artist David Tremlett in Ghizzano, where his painted facades are truly unique.

LAJATICO

It is thanks to the great tenor Andrea Bocelli, born in Lajatico, that this little piece of land is known to the world. Every summer the spectacular show of the Teatro del Silenzio is held close to a small lake ‘in the middle of nowhere’, surrounded by slabs of travertine and in the middle of it, a monumental fragmented human face by Igor Mitoraj. A place of music, art and strong emotions.

VOLTERRA

Also the artist Mauro Staccioli (who died in 2018) showed his love for his village by scattering the beautiful hills around Volterra with grand environmental sculptures made from concrete or metal. Circles, discs and stems are now part of this breathtaking inland scenery, as well as compulsory stops for super Instagrammable photos.
