Beyond the Leaning Tower

Pisa and its eternal, assured beauty. The essentials

PIAZZA DEI MIRACOLI
The first image that comes to mind when we think of Pisa is the immaculate Square of Miracles and the marble masterpieces that rise from its beautiful green lawns:

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
Founded in 1063, the cathedral is considered one of the most sublime examples of the Pisan Romanesque style. The facade, with its three rows of finely decorated arches, opens onto a stunning interior that culminates in the golden mosaic of the apse, created by Cimabue.

Tower of Pisa
The campanile of the cathedral is the city’s most iconic monument and the world’s most famous tower, as well as the most frequently instagrammed. What makes it so special is its leaning angle, due to subsidence in the underlying ground; it began during the early stages of the tower’s construction, which took exactly two centuries.

Baptistery
The largest in Italy, the Baptistery was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Inside is a baptismal font and a pulpit by Nicola Pisano.

Campo Santo
One of the world’s most ancient Christian funerary buildings. The magnificent embroidery-like decoration of the arches in the Cloister creates an unexpected contrast with the austere exterior.

PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI
Designed by Giorgio Vasari, this is Pisa’s second most important and beautiful square, home to the prestigious Scuola Normale university and the Palazzo dell’Orologio.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SAN MATTEO
One of Italy’s most important collections of Medieval art, including works by Donatello, Masaccio, Fra Angelico and Ghirlandaio.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DELLA SPINA
On the gorgeous 19th-century banks of the Arno stands this small Pisan Gothic gem, complete with spiky pinnacles.

PALAZZO BLU
A quick look along Lungarno Gambacorti is enough to spot this Renaissance palace, which today hosts major exhibitions, particularly of modern and contemporary art.

TUTTOMONDO BY KEITH HARING
This huge, colourful mural painted on the outside of the rectory of the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate is the last public work by the American artist who was considered one of the fathers of street art.
