ITINERARIES
A day in Apricale
23/04/2024
An enchanting sun-kissed village nestled in the heart of Imperia, less than an hour’s drive from The Mall Sanremo

CENTRAL SQUARE
The beating heart of this delightful village, loved also by the sun (its name, from the Latin apricus, means ‘sunny’). The square is the meeting point for the two neighbourhoods, abrìgu and ubàgu, to the south and north respectively, whose narrow streets, alleyways and tunnels lead to the discovery of new views, poetic corners, small restaurants, shops and bars, all steeped in the atmosphere of days gone by.

ORATORY OF SAN BARTOLOMEO
A Baroque-style building that jealously guards an oil painting of Sant’Antonio Abate dating back to the 16th century, and a 1544 polyptych of the Madonna della Neve, flanked by San Bartolomeo and San Lorenzo. Equally interesting is the parish church, located opposite.

CHURCH OF THE PURIFICATION OF THE VIRGIN MARY
An architectural treat that encompasses several styles, beginning with its original Gothic structure, later reformed in Baroque taste, and its neo-Romaesque facade. However, its distinctive feature its its ability to combine ancient and modern art: the bell tower is actually adorned with a bicycle, an installation by artist Sergio Bianco, entitled La forza della non gravità.

RURAL CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEGLI ANGELI
Inside this church located at the foot of the village, visitors can admire some wonderful frescoes from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

CASTLE OF THE LIZARD
Home to the Apricale Museum of History, the castle hosts countless exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Here, among archaeological finds, historical documents and mementoes, it’s easy to immerse yourself in the village’s past.

TAGGIASCA OLIVES
Apricale is the City of Olive Oil, land of the Taggiasca, a variety that gives exceptional quality extra-virgin oil. Don’t forget to try the olives in brine and the traditional olive pâté too.
