The history of French fashion
Designers, trends and glamour

Fashion for France is a gold mine that over the centuries has produced precious items, changing the course of history. Let’s take a look at some of the designers who have marked the history of French fashion, from the invention of pret-à-porter to today.

Saint Laurent
Founded in 1961 in Paris, Yves Saint Laurent was the first fashion house to launch the concept of luxury prêt-à-porter in 1966, with the Saint Laurent Rive Gauche line, synonymous with youth and freedom. The myth and aesthetics of Saint Laurent are more alive than ever. They reappear like every season on the maison’s catwalk and return relentlessly from an extraordinary archive built with passion in 40 years of career and now celebrated with two Yves Saint Laurent museums in Paris and Marrakech, two symbolic cities that have been united by the vision of an artist.

Givenchy is a French haute coutureand prêt-à-porter fashion house, created in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy. In the summer of 1953 the designer met Audrey Hepburn, who borrowed several looks for the film Sabrina, marking the beginning of a long collaboration and deep friendship between the actress and the designer, echoing the beginning of collaborations between cinema and fashion. Since its inception, Givenchyhas been synonymous with avant-garde elegance, tradition and modernity, while breaking fashion codes and marking history.

One of the youngest of the French brands that made history, Chloéwas founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, a Parisian born in Egypt – a woman of enigmatic beauty and bohemian spirit. Rejecting the strict formality of haute couture, she created the first collection of luxury prêt-à-porter. The maison’s success continued with the romantic, casual and glamorous line conceived by Gaby Aghion for Chloé to embody the aspirations of 1960s young women, and so on along a ride that has yet to stop.
