The iconic fashion photographer

A signature name in fashion photography, Peter Lindbergh has recently left us and something has changed forever.

Peter Lindbergh was the photographer of top models in the early 90s and contributed, with his shots to their global success. His black and white images were the inspiration for George Michael’s videos and for Gianni Versace‘s advertising campaigns. Over time he portrayed top models and celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Milla Jovovich, Kate Moss, Isabella Rossellini and Monica Bellucci, through black and white photographs that have become iconic.

Born in 1944 in Leszno, Poland, Lindbergh was of German nationality. His initiation took place in Düsseldorf where he lived, working alongside German photographer Hans Lux.In the late 1970s inParis he came into contact with personalities of the calibre ofHelmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Hans Feurer and developed a new concept of photographic portraiture. He became famous for the photographs of women that overturn the artificial beauty standards of fashion and for playing up character traits of female figures through expression and gesture.

His black and white images have narrated the world of fashion over the past 30 years. He was the only photographer to sign the Pirelli calendar three times, getting rid of nudes and granting a new style to enhance the beauty of the female body, as he explained in an interview, “My Pirelli is a non-nude calendar, but it strips the soul of actresses: therefore it is more naked than nude. It’s a calendar about sensitivity, emotion, and certainly not about perfect bodies”.
