The history of ancient textile production in Tuscany

Prato bases its history on the textile tradition. For more than 800 years this sector has represented the main livelihood of the city and, the Textile Museum, is one of the major European institutions dedicated to the enhancement of ancient and contemporary fabrics.

Founded in 1975 within the “Tullio Buzzi” Technical Institute, since 2003 the exhibition area has occupied the prestigious restored spaces of the Ex Cimatoria Campolmi, a 19th century factory and an important example of local industrial archeology.

The collection consists of over 7000 finds, clothes, accessories and fashion illustrations, which document the history of the fabric from the early Christian era to the present day, to which is added a substantial archive of industrial-era company samples, a section dedicated to modern materials, as well as machinery and work tools.

The museum is located in an area that boasts a millenary textile tradition and one of the most important T&A production districts in Italy, with over 6000 companies, which it promotes through its cultural initiatives.

The exhibition path, thematic exhibitions, educational activities for schools and families and playful events are the elements with which the space pursues its mission of disseminating the ancient and contemporary textile experience.

For those who love fashion, and its history,  Prato Textile Museum is a fundamental step to get to know and deepen this fascinating craft.
