Located in the heart of Nice, the MAMAC offers a dip in post-war international art from 1950 to today. With a collection of almost 1400 works by over 350 artists, the museum offers, among others, an original dialogue between the new European realism and American pop art. In the space are also exhibited important pieces of minimal and poor art. The gallery also highlights the singularity and importance of the local scene from the late 1950s to early 1970s. Nice and the Côte d’Azur were then an important place for experimenting and inventing new artistic gestures with leading figures such as Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Arman, Ben and groups such as Supports / Surface.
The museum is spread over five levels. A floor and a project room are dedicated to temporary international initiatives that alternate thematic exhibitions and monographs of the most famous names of the last sixty years. A publicly accessible roof terrace offers breathtaking panoramic views over Nice.
From 3 October to 28 March, MAMAC hosts the temporary exhibition “SHE-BAM POW POP WIZZ! The Amazons of Pop ”telling the story of a generation of European and North American women who have contributed with audacity and opulence to a less famous side of international Pop Art.
Guided tours, workshops, meetings with creatives and researchers, storytelling paths, conferences and screenings, dance performances, concerts, shows and events, promote the accessibility of contemporary art to the wider public, transforming the space into a playground for artists from different fields. Furthermore, for some years MAMAC has been engaged in active reading anchored to the problems of modern society: the highlighting of singular figures and the production of new stories. The relationship with nature and how ecological challenges are addressed is one of the key topics raised in the program.
