The Sanremo Festival’s most iconic looks
Outfits that made fashion and music history

The Sanremo Festival is music, but also fashion. While we’re waiting for the 72nd edition, scheduled from 1 to 5 February 2022 in the historic setting of the Teatro Ariston, here’s a round-up of looks that made history.

Let’s start with Nilla Pizzi and her long floaty dresses, complete with romantic bodices, embroidery and sequins, in which she swept the board in 1952. After her, Mina and her midi dresses in the 60s, like the balloon dress she wore when she won with her song Il cielo in una stanza, or the polka dot one worn for her famous performance of Mille bolle blu. Another to mention is Orietta Berti’s futuristic dresdesigned by Mila Schon in 1969.

Moving on to the 70s and 80s and three goddesses of transformation: Anna Oxa, who since her first appearance at the Festival in 1978 aged just 17, amazed everyone with her short hair and the androgynous look created for her by Ivan Cattaneo ; Patty Pravo, beautiful in 1984 singing Per una bambola in a geisha-style outfit designed by Gianni Versace, and Loredana Berté, also dressed, two years later, by Versace, in that controversial mini-dress, complete with a fake baby bump.

In the 90s it was the turn of Sabrina Salerno and Jo Squillo, provocative and challenging, singing

Siamo donne, oltre alle gambe c’è di più…”, of Claudia Koll, alongside Pippo Baudo, in a Versace dress with a long, full checkered skirt, and Paola and Chiara, in jeans that marked that era, as did the military-style jackets worn by Laura Pausini.

Speaking of more recent editions, we recall Belen Rodriguez in 2012 in the famous two-tone dress with a vertiginous slit, Bianca Balti’s enchanting Dolce & Gabbana outfits in 2013, and Achille Lauro’s, spectacular 2020 looks designed by Alessandro Michele of Gucci, inspired by St. Francis, David Bowie, Luisa Casati Stampa and Queen Elizabeth 1. We conclude with 2021 and Madame’s Dior dresses and Etros transparent jumpsuit with which Maneskin won the final.
